About

FDA x Civics is a middle school civics program for students who want to improve their research, outreach, discussion, speaking, and activism skills! Students use these learnings to create their own social entrepreneurship programs. FDA’s Civics for Horner Middle School* students was established in 2020 and is our first civics program. Here’s some of the exciting work our students have been up to!

COVID-19 has brought forth many unique challenges that people are struggling to adapt to, and for the homeless population, these complications have risen to an entirely new level. Homelessness is already a highly pervasive issue, but the its effects and severity is now compounded during the pandemic. . . . Through our project, we hope to aid the homeless by providing masks, food, or even shelter if possible. If our efforts are fruitful, the homeless people around us will have a lower chance of contracting and spreading COVID-19.

California, home to Hollywood, the Golden Gate Bridge, Yosemite National Park, and much more, is one of the greatest places in the country. However, it still has a lot of problems to be fixed, including road safety. In order to combat this issue, we prepared an email draft to send to the Fremont Sustainability Team and are requesting them to consider our rotomill policy proposition while updating their Climate Action Plan. We’re also gathering donations by working with a local business.

Mental health has a notable effect on a large number of people - about 46.6% of adults around the US, according to Mental Health First Aid. Mental health refers to a person’s psychological and emotional well-being. Some examples of mental illnesses include depression, anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. We felt this to be an integral issue as mental health can affect many important aspects of an individual’s life. We chose the plan of fundraising for an organization that helps people who deal with mental illness. The primary reason this is important is that people with mental illness come from different economic backgrounds and they all deserve to receive the treatment they need.

The amount of pollution that humans produce every day is growing at an alarming rate, and a large portion of the toxic pollution is electronic waste. Electronic waste, or e-waste, are electronics that have been discarded and are no longer being used. We planned a local electronic drop off bin that would collect old electronics that work but that aren’t being used, such as phones, iPads, and computers.

As many people know, wildfires throughout California have been worsening air quality as well as the overall health of people in the state. The fires across the West Coast are examples of real ways the changing climate is affecting our communities. The official website for the Fire and Forestry Department states that the overall temperature and carbon dioxide levels are increasing, which will result in forest fires. To help reduce the probability of forest fires occurring, communities need to realize the intensity of this issue and educate everyone on how global warming is affecting California and other parts of the world.
